L-Jay Maasai (real name James Lekishon Ole Kamwaro Groove Award Winner is a Kenyan gospel musician from Narok Rift Valley based in Nairobi with passion to serve and minister.
He was partly raised in Maasai land Narok and attended Moi Primary School, Narok, then joined Light Academy, Ngong and finished his secondary education at Millenium Academy in Nairobi.
He discovered his music talent when he was a child and was helped to nurture it by his teachers and parents.
He put in more effort while in high school way back in 2008.
While in school, L-Jay recorded several secular songs with fellow hip hop musician Felipe Muinamo, with whom they worked together for several years before Felipe relocated to the U.S.A to further his studies.
He then sought to work with a Ugandan female musician Nanah Lisa with whom they recorded an album ‘Extra Average’ although the album was never released due to what he calls complications that arose when they were just about to release it.
In 2011 after completing secondary school, L-jay got born-again and received Christ as his personal saviour, subsequently taking a break from music to concentrate on his spiritual growth.
In late 2012, his passion for music could not allow him to keep away from the studio any longer.
He released his first Gospel Song ‘Maasai for Christ’ in January this year; it is a song that reaches out to fellow Maasai to get to know Jesus.
The song had a good response in both local and international market from the time it was released.
He later released his hit single ‘Laleiyo’ mid this year which he featured the ‘agiginyani’ mistress Shiru Wa GP and the song was an instant hit receiving airplay across all TV and radio stations nationwide and more recently on DSTV channels.
The success of the video has had him receiving calls for live performances from all corners of the country.
His performing dress code and attire;
Maasai traditional regalia has got him into talks with an International Clothing line Anglohili which he is partnering with to officially launch his currently running clothing line Entauwo wear on an International platform early next year.
He is also planning music tours abroad in which he aims to represent Kenya and its rich culture in-depth through his music of which the tour dates are yet to be released.
At the age of nineteen, with immense energy and un-sizable spirit,
L-jay says his motivation comes from the word of God with a lot of determination and passion to minister, win souls to the kingdom of God and change lives generally.
L-Jay claims he will stop at nothing as he has started and is now heading three major campaigns namely; Tribe 254 (embracing a tribe called Kenya), Msichana halisi (care for girls rights) and Daily bread (feeding the street families).
