R&B icon Aaliyah tragically died on August 25th 2001. She was only 22-years-old. Fans and contemporaries alike have long since mourned the death of “The Princess of Pop.”
Aaliyah was on her way home from the Bahamas. She was there to film the music video for her smash hit “Rock the Boat” and the shoot wrapped early. She decided to take a two engine plane home instead of waiting on her scheduled flight.
The plane was carrying the equipment from the shoot and was not prepared to carry the extra weight. The plane went down just 200 feet away from the runway. It was later found to be 700 pounds over the limit. No one among the 8 passengers survived.
Aaliyah left behind many people that loved and idolized her and her music has proven to stand the test of time. One of people who knew her best was her boyfriend Damon Dash. Dash co-founded Roc-A-Fella Records with Jay-Z.
Damon Dash recently shed some light on his relationship with the singer and her final days on this earth. On and episode of “The Real,” he says that, though the two were not officially engaged, they had planned on getting married.
